That being said, people should read this book for the phenomenal writing, the complex and well-developed characters and setting, the ode to hip-hop, and the love letter to the 90s and Brooklyn.

And one should never stop learning their lessons. Life is a school called the school of life, young God. Each character’s individual views prompted eye-opening conversations that were personal and complex and the story might be set in the 90s but the discussions are still very much relevant. Most importantly the conversations that take place in this book particularly about race but also about gender and sex and music are handled so well and the intersectionality is just beautifully done. ’Cause you ain’t just doing this for Steph you doing this for you. You gotta keep going and remember who you doing this for. It made me invested in Steph as an individual character rather than the just the person his friends and family saw him as and therefore made me more personally invested in figuring out who his killer was. And while this story takes place in 90s Brooklyn when I was barely alive and no where near Brooklyn, it felt familiar. I picked up Let Me Hear a Rhyme mostly because I’ve been missing NYC and Brooklyn and especially Bed-Stuy like crazy and I thought this would help fill the hole in my heart. I follow her on Twitter and she’s just an icon and then so many people whose bookish opinions I trust have loved her work so I felt like it was a pretty safe bet I would love it too. But do you ever think that maybe telling the truth works just as well?” Let Me Hear A Rhyme by Tiffany D.

You lie to protect people’s feelings, thinking you know what’s best for them. Not to mention, they still don’t know who killed Steph and as they get closer to the truth it becomes clear they aren’t the only ones keeping secrets. People are loving it, but when it catches the attention of a big music rep who wants to meet Steph, it gets a lot more complicated. But no one’s going to listen to the music of a ghost so they release Steph’s songs as The Arctitect and everything seems great. With the help of Steph’s younger sister Jasmine, they come up with a plan to keep Steph’s dreams alive and make sure people know his name. Until his best friends Quadir and Jarrell discover that Steph recorded dozens of his songs before dying. Summary: When Steph is killed it feels like his dreams died with him.
