Although "The Last Song" is standard Sparks fare, I found myself completely immersed in the story. After your heartstrings have been thoroughly tugged, the finale is classic Sparks. Suddenly tragedy strikes, which will bring many readers to tears. There is a deeply romantic love, but of course something stands in the way (very "Romeo and Juliet"). Upon her arrival, Ronnie befriends the town's unsavory characters and develops "a thing" for a blue-eyed jock.Īs the novel progresses, it falls into the same formula as all Nicholas Sparks books. A former Juilliard prodigy, Ronnie has rebelled and has no intention of changing, no matter where she spends the summer. This is, of course, the father Ronnie has not spoken to for three years since he divorced her mother and left them all. The story begins with 17-year-old Veronica "Ronnie" Miller protesting her mother's decision to have Ronnie and her brother spend the summer in Wilmington, N.C., with their father. So, I began to read, and six hours later I closed the book. Alas, boredom struck, and the book was readily available - my roommate had it. With so much hype about both the book and the movie, I did not really want to cave. "The Last Song" by Nicholas Sparks was the last novel I wanted to read.
